Redirect Checker: See Every Hop, Status Code and Header
Trace a URL hop by hop with timing for each step, then read the headers that can keep a page out of search without any sign in the HTML.
A browser hides redirects. You type http://example.com, you land on a page, and you never see that you passed through three hops on the way.
Crawlers do see them. Long chains waste crawl time, temporary redirects can stop an index from updating, and an X-Robots-Tag: noindex header can keep a page out of results while the HTML looks perfectly normal.
How to use it
- Enter a URL. Start with the
http://version of your homepage for the most useful result. - We follow the chain one hop at a time, up to 10 hops, recording status and time for each.
- Read the checks, then the headers of the final response.
What the checks mean
- Chain length. One redirect is fine. Beyond three is a fail, because each extra hop costs time and link signal.
- 301 and 302. Permanent moves should use 301 or 308. Temporary codes in a permanent move slow index updates.
- Headers. We check
X-Robots-Tag,Strict-Transport-Security,Cache-Control,Content-Typeand any canonicalLinkheader.
Every hop goes through the same safety checks as our other tools, so we will not follow a redirect that points at a private or internal address.
